Early childhood music teachers are in an ideal position to contribute to understandings of the roles young children’s participation in music plays in their social, emotional, cognitive, and physiological development. In this session, the facilitators share recent findings from the National Endowment of the Arts regarding early childhood arts participation. Using those as a springboard for discussion, participants will (1) identify research topics for national-scale studies, and (2) begin discussing ways to carry out research collaboratively. By pooling expertise and resources, we can add cohesion among practice, research, and policy to benefit the musical lives of children.


Dr. Alison Reynolds is associate professor of music education in the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she guides undergraduate and graduate students in early childhood and general music research and teaching. In the roles of researcher, teacher, curriculum author, presenter, and in service to the profession, she strives to prioritize responsive, inclusive, collaborative music making and research--especially with her youngest colleagues: the children. Diana R. Dansereau is assistant professor of music, music education at Boston University, and is dedicated to enriching the musical lives of young children. She demonstrates this by researching music learning in early childhood; working with undergraduate and graduate students to critically analyze practice; implementing innovative musical experiences in early childhood and elementary settings; serving professional organizations whose missions pertain to advancing children’s music learning; and evaluating arts organizations’ and schools’ music programs for children.
